Has it really been 2 1/2 weeks?

The last time I posted was 2 1/2 weeks ago - sorry about that. With the baby's newfound mobility he has become a destructive crawling machine, and is trying desperately to walk, but all he's managed so far is an unassisted stand. Which, for the record, I don't like one bit. I was kind of hoping he'd be a late walker so I could have his babyhood somewhat extended, but alas, he's an independent person with his own agenda.

Darn it anyway.

In my own news, I just finished the last class I needed to obtain my Accounting Certificate - go me! I'm going to call the advisor today to talk about what steps I need to take in order to get it awarded.

Other than that all is pretty quiet on this western front, and I hope to be able to update more now that my class is done.

Mama's food is way better

I figured out how to get the baby to eat stuff - I have to eat it first. You might be thinking "yeah, no kidding, everyone knows that you dolt", but please remember that I have spent the last 8 months gloriously sleep deprived, and am pleasantly surprised when I remember how to brush my teeth.

This means that my diet is dwindling to baby friendly foods - bananas, Cheerios, ACTUAL baby food (for the record: pureed carrots are nasty and they stain everything they touch - skin, clothing, carpet, upholstery, etc.), and so forth until DH gets home at night and can distract the baby so I can eat something real.

He still won't eat stuff if I hand it to or set it in front of him (I actually have to put it in his mouth), but he willingly opens up and leans forward when I hold something out.

I'm calling it progress.

Hello out there!

I admit it - I'm a geek. I recently discovered the beauty of blog traffic tracking (I just signed up for Google Analytics yesterday), and have been obsessing over the information contained therein. In combing through it I have discovered that a lot more people read this blog than I thought (or expected), so now I feel the need to update more often. However, I have a question - who are you people, and why aren't you commenting?

Yeah, that's right, I'm talking to you Hillsboro. How'd you find me? Are you a mass murderer? If not - do you have a kid? Can we make a playdate? Email me - confessionsofasahm@gmail.com - I have a bored almost 8 month old and I need to find ways to entertain him.

Yes, that's right, I said 8 months. Holy crap.

For your amusement - here's a video I took and DH converted of the baby crawling a bit. While watching it I realized that he's much better at it now than he was when I took the video, and there's no sound (though we can't figure out why), but I think it retains some of its cuteness nonetheless.

More teeth, and a newfound mobility

My baby boy is getting so big - his top two teeth are finally breaking through (which is resulting in MUCH whining). He's also fully mobile now and is crawling like a champ. This means I get to trap him in his various play stations (saucer of neglect, baby cage, etc.) while I'm doing stuff to ensure he doesn't get into trouble while I'm busy with other things - resulting in even more whining. I try to explain to him that it's only temporary until we can baby-proof, but alas - I don't speak Ewok.

New Look

I finally figured out how to change the background on my blog, and now I feel a little more special. Never you mind that it's just a freebie layout from http://www.thecutestblogontheblock.com - let me have my moment, willya?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

First Blood...

The baby had his first major/minor accident about an hour ago, and I'm still recovering.

DH had the day off from work today because he had some stuff he had to take care of, so he got home earlier than normal. I had some things to package up and take to the Post Office, so DH took the baby upstairs to play while he checked his email. I'm happily taping up packages on the kitchen island when I hear:

*thump* *thud thud*

"What...? Eh, it was probably just the cat jump-..."

Then I hear a scream that makes my heart leap into my throat, and that screechy record sound echo in my head. I drop what I'm doing and tear down the hall and up the stairs, only to be met by DH who has the screaming baby in his arms and is bringing him downstairs. His first words were "It's ok, it's ok..." to which I reply "WHAT HAPPENED???" (because, you know, I'm calm like that). Apparently, the baby had pulled himself up to a standing position using one of the bookshelves in the office and his little hand slipped, resulting in a bonked noggin, a fat lip, and lots of blood (mouth wounds bleed a lot - thank GOD I know that). He cried and cried for what felt like days, but was probably only about 10 minutes or so, while we mopped up his mouth, gave him a frozen teething ring, tried to nurse him (he wouldn't), and generally tried to distract him.

He is now down for a nap - his little lip still swollen and what looks like the beginning of a shiner above his left eye and on his cheekbone. DH feels awful (though I have to admit, I'm glad it was him and not me - terrible? Maybe, but true), we both feel like we've run about five marathons, and the damn bookshelf is none the worse for the wear.

Yet.

Anyone need some firewood?

This week's installment of "Is this food?"...

So, the baby is crawling now (sort of). It's a combination army crawl and hands and knees lurch, but he's mobile. Thus begins the game of "Is this food?". The smaller and more potentially dangerous something is the faster he gets it to his mouth, so I'm spending an inordinate amount of time staring at him to make sure I get to whatever it is before he does. However, when I give him actual food, it gets no where near his mouth - he just throws it on the floor. What's the deal, yo?

Here's how I spend much of my time:

"Hmmm, yum yum yum, that furry thing looks like it would be mighty tasty!" *lurches toward object in question* *Mom swoops in and removes offending item* "HEY - that was mine!" :cries: *Mom redirects baby's attention to a toy, which goes in the mouth* *Mom hands over a Cheerio* "ZOMGWTF DID YOU JUST HAND ME?? POOOOIIIIISSSOOONNNN!!!" *fling*

Sigh.

Updates

I can't believe it's been so long since I've updated - sorry folks.

Anyway, things are good here. We're learning to live within our tight budget, and I have a lot going on besides taking care of the munchkin. I'm about to start working from home for my old employer doing the accounting portion of their yearly inventory, and I just started a class that will complete my accounting certificate - which is exciting.

On the baby front - he's just started this new thing where if he sees daddy leave, he bursts into tears. It's awesome. Sigh.

Also, we've discovered that he's allergic to the cats, so we need to find them a new home. I'd try to work with the allergy, but his reactions are getting stronger by the day, and I would rather not have to rush my baby to the ER at some point because the cat decided to brush up against him.

He's trying really hard to crawl, but gets frustrated because he can't get the locomotion right. He has also regressed to waking up 80 billion times a night, so we're attempting the "No-Cry Sleep Solution", and I'm keeping nap logs to help get him on a set schedule.

He had his 6 month checkup with the doctor on the 6th, and everything looks great. He's hitting all his milestones, he took his shots like a champ (I think it helped that both DH and I were there, so when he started screaming there were two of us to calm and distract him from the pain) he's 27 3/4" long, and weighs 19 lbs 4 oz. Having such a big healthy boy makes a mama proud.

I think that's all the news that's fit to print, and I'll try to be better about updating (work/school/baby permitting).

He six months old - must be time for solid food!

We gave the tiny dictator his first taste of solid food today - a bit of mashed avocado that I was eating anyway (we decided to skip over the whole rice cereal thing cuz that's how we roll). We were met with mixed reviews. He didn't hate it, but he also didn't seem to know what to do with it. DH put together a video (including an extended clip of the baby sitting up on his own that I'm sure is excruciatingly boring to anyone but us) which I shall torture you with now. Enjoy!
